Skiing in Stowe, Vermont Underway!

Early skiing and riding in Stowe, Vermont and the surrounding areas has started! Despite a warmer and dryer start to the ski season most resorts in the area have opened or will open in the next week. There is even some nordic skiing to be found! Early to mid-December is a great time to take advantage of reduced lift ticket and lodging rates and uncrowded trails. With investments and advancements in snowmaking, more trails are open early season and several nordic centers are operational without any natural snow.

Always check the dailiy ski report and your favorite resort before heading out. Below are links to the ski condition reports at some of our favorite local hills:

Embrace Stick Season in Stowe, Vermont

Stick Season is here! This quiet, grey time of year immediataly following the beauty of foliage is often dreaded and vilified by locals (and tourists) but Stick Season may be the most unappreciated time of year in Stowe, VT. The Village is calmer and the average speed on Mountain Rd rises above 20 mph. Hiking this time of year is so special, with the leaves and undergrowth down and snow still a month away it is easy to enjoy the beauty of the mountain terrain and unique features along favorite trails. Paths that are often dark and shady are open and sunny, the afternoon sun warms the chilly air and trails are usually dry. The recreation path is almost deserted and a drive through the Notch can be enjoyed at your own pace.

It is hunting season so make sure to wear orange while hiking and don't forget bright colors for your dogs as well!

Check out the Stowe Land Trust website for some great Stick Season walking, hiking or biking ideas.

While a few stores and restaurants close in early November to provide owners and staff a much deserved break before the winter season, most not only remain open, but offer great deals during this time. So before the snow flies and the holiday season rush starts get our and enjoy the "worst" season in Stowe, Vermont.

For a list of events going on this time of year check out the Stowe Area Association calendar of events:

FALL in Love with Your House Again

This fall, FALL in love with your house again! Feeling blah about your home, not looking forward to a long winter staring at the same four walls and tired decor? For $10,000 combined these 3 projects can improve how you feel about your home.

  • PUT ON A NEW FACE. Give your kitchen cabinets new life with paint and more modern fixtures. Want to step it up a notch? Consider new doors and drawer covers from a cabinetmaker or doormaker. Refacing the average size kitchen runs around $6,000.
  • LET THERE BE MORE LIGHT. Dark spaces are a common complaint among homeowenrs. Try tublar skylights for small spaces such as bathrooms and hallways and are far more affordable than full skylights. Four tubes installed will set you back a mere $2,000. Good investment for more natural light.
  • TIDY UP. Invest in built-in organization systems to help declutter key problem areas: master bedroom closet, laundry room and pantry. Expect to spend around $1,000 for these space saving additions. Then consider hiring a professional organizer to help purge and tidy up what you decide to keep ($50-$150 and hour).
